But there is some good too...

After banging my head on the wall for a little while, I made a little head way. I have a business trip at the end of February. I also have a Discover card. I will be reimbursed for all expenses. This is good.

What make it better is that Discover has chosen now until the end of March to offer 5% cash back on all travel purchases including airfare and hotel. I just booked the flight and got a reimbursement check same day. See? It pays to be nice to the folks in accounting! I immediately paid the flight amount to the card so I don't accrue any interest and will deposit the check on the way home. Done.

At the end of the trip I will have gotten back about $30 cash back at no cost to me. This will be applied right to my balance. Now I only have to find $30 more to cover the cost of being a bonehead. I feel a little bit better. Not a whole lot, but a little...

Now THAT'S the way to do it! :) While I'm not real thrilled about having to be a bank to and loan money to my fortune 500 employer (I too travel for work and have to be reimbursed), this is certainly a way to make the best of it! It's silly that if you can get the money same day from accounting, you even have to front the money in the first place. Too bad this is a standard practice in business today.

Nicely done! Do you also have frequent flyer miles? Make sure to sign up for that via the airline and the hotel, and many programs let you somehow tie in other purchases (like through your supermarket savings card), so even buying a can of tuna fish or something can earn you some extra miles.

Oh, by the way, you have officially been tagged.
